Kiara was sat on the grass, minding her own business, wrapped up in her thoughts. With an apple in her left hand, her pen in her right hand, and a notepad balanced on her knee, she felt a little strange compared to everyone else who was socializing. She sighed silently, writing more words on the ever-filling page. What was the writing about? The things she was thinking. She was smart with doing so, though, since she wanted no one to know what she was thinking, she wrote in code. A language she made up and got used to after two years of feeling lonely. I hope she lives on forever in heaven. Was what she wrote last. Who was she, you ask? Someone so important to Kiara. The only reason she was still here, living on this Earth.
No, Kiara wasn't suicidal, though it had crossed her mind once or twice before, she knew she could never go through with it. She was too scared to ever pull that card. She would never admit it, though. She didn't want people thinking she was a weak person. What will he take from me next? She wrote as a soft breeze washed over her, blowing her dark fringe from her dark green-explosion eyes. She looked up for a second at the blue afternoon sky. Despite it being the season of autumn, the air was still warm. It was usually warm around here, or it had been over the past week since Kiara moved to Tournesolie. She was glad she left her old home in the way she had. It made her feel like she'd fulfilled the wishes of a woman after she passed away. Kiara felt special to be the last and only one to watch her ashes float away down the cliffs and over the cold sea. She knew how much it meant to that person.
All these things she'd never tell. I hope I made her happy when she saw my last action. Kiara's eyes were dry. That person had told her not to cry when she was gone, because she'd always be around, even when she wasn't visible. Even when Kiara discovered her lifeless body, she held back the urge to cry out. 'I will do what she wants.' Kiara had thought when she realised what was going on. 'It's time for me to grow up and accept this slap in the face from life.' That's all life did; hit you in the face. Take things from you. Make sure you can't have the things you want. It's cruel, it really is, but maybe, if you show no emotion, it would stop picking on you, because it knew you would not be affected by it. It sounded stupid, but that's what people told you to do with bullies, right? Life was a bully. It made sense if you thought about it.
She shivered, even though it was warm. She was wearing a pink vest top, a white skirt, ripped tights and tartan shoes. Not what people usually wear, but Kiara liked to be different, it made her feel special in some way. Like she was her own person, with a mind of her own. No one could tell her what to do. She doodled around the words she wrote on the page, small decorations that were symbols, and only made sense to her. No one could take this away from her and understand what the hell she was on about. One side of her mouth turned up into a little smile, this was hers, and no one else's. Life couldn't take this away from her.

(my honoured brethren; we come together to unite as one against those who are damned.)[we show no mercy for we have none.] how long had he slept? about twelve, maybe thirteen hours? the previous night he had crawled into his own bed at about eight pm – for some entirely odd reason – and he had woken up every two hours for five minutes before he finally drifted off at about four am. only four hours later, though, roy had shook him awake and made him wake up. it was hard to calculate the length of time, for he wasn’t one for mathematics. it was hard to him, the numbers he got a bit mixed up with, especially with algebra. fortunately he was getting better at it. he glanced down at the notebook in his hand and then opened it to the front, writing down a few calculations.
eight to twelve is four. twelve to eight is eight hours. together that’s... a frown made its way onto his face, twelve hours. and then the attempt to take out the five minutes. eight to ten.. five minutes. ten oh-five to twelve oh-five... no. um... eight to ten, five minutes. ten to twelve... ten minutes... twelve to two, fifteen minutes... and two to... four is... twenty minutes. so i slept for... eleven hours and forty minutes? he asked himself, feeling a prick of irritation at his inability to be sure what he was doing in maths. he lightly twitched and flung his notebook to the back, where he kept his hidden collection of songs.
there was quite a lot of songs, now that he thought about it. he didn’t want to count, but his latest song was made from the devil may cry theme, and was called ‘devil’s cry (shall never surrender)’. the words, it always brought a twitch of memories to his pale purple eyes, as did another song, called ‘glamorous sky’ – both the original japanese and the english. he didn’t let anyone see his songs, he wouldn’t even sing, he refused to. he believed that his voice didn’t sound good to his ears. he was fine with his speaking voice, and people found that pleasurable to listen to, but he didn’t find his singing voice at all good. he didn’t know that he was an incredible singer.
slowly he reached into placed the lid of his fountain pen back in the nib, eventually moving away from the groups of socialising people. he felt cold, not included, but he was a quiet, anti-social teenager anyway. he found it hard to let others in, though roy kanba was perhaps the only one who actually managed to get into riley’s circle of trust without even trying, and there was a reason for that. riley, despite the age difference, had a large crush on the family friend. when roy found out, they had actually got together. the solitary child had never thought it would happen. it was... strange. there was a thirteen, fourteen year age difference between them, but it sometimes felt... much less.
roy and riley lived together, roy as the younger’s guardian. the man was a teacher at riley’s old school, in hokkaidō, and then he was transferred to curator academy on tournesolie isle. he figured out why when roy told him – magic was undeniably real, despite it not being used nowadays, and roy was one of those users of magic. and there were these mystic beings called ‘guadians’. it was... fascinating, and riley was taken with roy to train as one of the ‘mages’ or whatever they were called.
he stayed silent for a moment, lowering his pale purple gaze for a moment, feeling a coolness in the air as he entered the shade by the trees. it was at that moment he stumbled upon his own feet. he stood still for a moment, shaking his head for a moment, before placing a hand on his forehead. despite the shade a glow of silver red faint marks appeared on his skin, however dull they were. only those who looked closely would realise them. sudden memories rushed through his head, like a sudden storm, and all he could see for a moment was a blackened room in a castle, a few bodies nearby him, a crown of silver upon the floor and stains of blood everywhere, but it was soon replaced by a memory of this morning, of him playing the piano (something he knew he was good at, like the guitar) and he instantly relaxed, finally noticing a girl sitting in the grass, doodling in a notebook of her own. he chewed his lip for a moment, bringing up his courage before moving over to her, slowly, and quietly greeting her.
“u-um... hey.”
riley was glad he didn’t go off into another language. Kiara almost jumped at the sound of someone's voice nearby, even though they were fairly quiet, Kiara had forgotten there was other people around in the park. She lost track of a lot of things these days. She moved her dulling green eyes to see a boy, maybe a little bit older than her by a year or so, he looked and sounded quite shy, maybe slightly anti-social like she could be. Even though she felt a little edgy herself, she placed a fake smile on her lips to make him feel comfortable. She wasn't going to snap at the guy, she wasn't like that, unless someone acted that way towards her, but that was something different. She moved her black hair away from her eyes a little, careful not to let the smile drop and then spoke in a soft and friendly tone. The quietness of her voice balanced with his.
"'Ello." Her Yorkshire accent was still quite strong in her voice, but it wasn't like broad yorkshire, thick and hardly understandable. One of her grandparents used to speak like that. She used to smile and nod, pretending she could understand a word he spoke. She closed the notepad and placed it on the ground as if it was worth a million pounds, and left her pen sitting on top of it. She then moved her right hand down the bottom of her left arm awkwardly, still friendly. "Uhm.. Do you wanna sit down?" He didn't seem like a threat to her, but as she tore the fresh green grass from the ground, she asked herself if she could trust this guy. Maybe he was disguised his real self with a harmless looking shy boy. Who knew?
All she needed was a good look in his eyes, and she'd get clues into who he really was. She hoped he would sit down near her, so she could get a good look into his life, memories and secrets. Of course, it wasn't that easy. She would only get images, clips and sounds from looking into people's eyes. Never would she get the full story straight out like that. Happy people who never masked themselves were the easiest to read. They were the boring people. People like herself were a lot harder to understand, and that's when it became a challenge for her. These visions or whatever the hell they were had appeared to her for as long as she could remember. Sometimes the things she saw would be distressing, some would make her feel depressed, others would make her feel happier about the world. Sometimes she felt as if she belonged somewhere when she looked at someone.
It was an amazing feeling, but it never lasted that long. Afterwards she'd feel even lonelier than she had been feeling in the first place. They say you can't miss the things you don't have, so if you never felt happy, or welcome somewhere, you weren't going to get upset over it, right? That's why she tried not to attach herself to people or things any more, because when it's gone, you won't feel as bad about your loss. She knew what loss felt like. She was still young, but she'd experienced it so many times it was like it was a part of her now. There were so many things she wasn't going to understand about life, herself, and other people. For some reason, since she lost the last person she ever felt close to, she based everything around life and death. She couldn't stop thinking about it, and it was starting to get her really down.
At that moment, she remembered the boy was still here with her, and she still didn't know his name. Time for introductions. "I, um, I'm Kiara Foxglove. Just got here a week ago. What about you?" She really needed to see into those eyes of his now, she felt like it was something she had to do these days. Sometimes she tried telling herself it wasn't something that came naturally to a person, so she should stop using this.. 'Power' as much as she did. No one else she'd met had the same ability, so why should she be so selfish as to see right through them when they couldn't see through her? She shouldn't, but now, she just couldn't let it go.

(my honoured brethren; we come together to unite as one against those who are damned.)[we show no mercy for we have none.] he was met with a jump when he greeted the girl, but he couldn’t blame her, for she must’ve been rather... deep in thought while doodling in her notebook. he met her green coloured optics with his own phantom purple orbs, and a twitch of a smile was on his face, and he allowed it to be on his face when she placed a smile on her own lips, though he was able to tell, for some reason, it was fake. he analysed others too much, he felt...
“’ello.” it was obviously one of the accents of england, perhaps north west? north east? somewhere up north in england, or perhaps the midlands... he had no idea where, for he never studied the vast variety of english accents, though he was told he had some english in his voice, and sometimes he could hear it, but he mostly had the accent of someone from hokkaidō, or even somewhere in north america. his accent went up in pitch at the end of a sentence sometimes, too, making things sound like a question, which wasn’t intentional, and sometimes he would end up rolling his ‘r’s, reminding himself of a spanish person. a reminder in his head appeared, and he smiled a bit more when he remembered that he was apparently rather good at accents.
“uhm. do you wanna sit down?”
it was almost a shock to him, but he shuffled a bit nearer to the girl, respecting her personal space, but not sitting on the grass just yet. he felt too... involved in his thoughts. what made him a bit wary of people, especially when they came up from behind him? perhaps it was something bad in his past that he couldn’t remember. after all, he couldn’t remember how he got the scar on his chest and on his shoulder blade. it was just a huge void of blankness that came up when he tried to remember.
what really came up was the scent of fire, then the familiar scent of blossom and then ocean water, and then woods, and then the fresh clean air of the skies...
“i, um, i’m kiara foxglove. just got here a week ago. what about you?”
he slowly lowered himself to the ground beside her, trying to figure how to give her as much information as possible without her thinking that he didn’t live on tournesolie now. “boku wa- i’m riley sakura raines,” he corrected himself before continuing, mentally screeching at his inability to keep speaking english, “i got here... well, maybe two weeks ago. my guardian is a teacher at the academy. my parents are back in hokkaidō, in japan.” he spoke with ease, feeling that he was able to trust the girl as he gazed at the floor, before lifting his head as he placed his notebook in front of him, laying the pen on the cover with a small flash of a nervous smile.
emotionally guarded purple eyes met hers and he hoped he wouldn’t question his strange eye colour, and the now ghost of a smirk on his lips. why was he smirking? the smirk seemed to fit perfectly on his face but the rest of his expressions, his composure, they didn’t fit it as all, as if some unknown being was trying to carve a smirk onto his pale tanned skin...

Their eyes met, but he was still too far away for Kiara to try and figure him out. He wasn't too far away for her to notice his strange purple irises, though. She'd never met someone with purple eyes before. Was he wearing contacts? Contacts, ugh, they were so annoying to try and see through, the plain ones, they were just fine. A bit more complicated, but she was still able to read someone through them. The coloured ones? They blocked Kiara right out. When looking into someone's eyes, Kiara only needed to see their irises and pupils, the sclera wasn't all that important, since they had no pattern, and everyone's was the same, just about. If this boy was wearing contacts, things were going to get a little bit difficult for her.
He was slow to sit down, after she offered, but he did in the end. His slowness didn't annoy Kiara, in fact, she was thankful. He was unaware of the fact he was buying Kiara more time for her to prepare herself for the... 'Journey', I suppose you could call it, into his soul. Once he was beside her, Kiara was careful not to lock eyes with him straight away, as it would've been a bit creepy. She listened as he introduced himself as Riley Sakura Raines, not missing the fact that he had started speaking in a language which sounded much like Japanese. And he made that part clear that he was from Japan after telling her he'd arrived a week before her, with a teacher. Kiara hadn't actually spoken to anyone yet, she didn't know any teachers at all, let alone students, well, apart from Riley, but she'd only just met him.
"Oh, well that's nice, Riley." She made a note to remember his name, since he was the first person she'd met here, and he didn't seem to be some idiot guy who was self-obsessed and annoying. She picked a dieing daisy up from the grass, picking out it's petals one by one, "I couldn't help but noticing the strange colour of your eyes. I've never seen someone with purple eyes before, is that your actual eye colour?" Perfect time to look into his eyes. She turned slightly, and their eyes locked. Kiara was now in deep concentration, searching for an imagine, a sound, a clip that could give her clues on his past, secrets, or thoughts. She searched for what seemed like a life time, but all she found was a blackness, and a high-pitched ringing that never ended, like the sound you get when you damage your hearing from having your music too loud.
The noise irritated her, the blackness scared her. The fact she couldn't see through him made her furious. Kiara tore her eyes away, snapping her eyelids shut, unable to stay connected to him for any more time, and reopening them as her sight returned, and the ringing died out. She shot him a funny look from the side, questions flooding her mind. Why couldn't she see through him? She was usually able to see through even the most guarded people. Why was Riley so different? Was she doing something wrong? No, she couldn't be... There was no wrong way to see into someone, you just look into their eyes and concentrate with everything you have. It wasn't right. Something wasn't right about this Riley person... And she was going to find out about him, even if it killed her.

(my honoured brethren; we come together to unite as one against those who are damned.)[we show no mercy for we have none.] there didn’t seem to be interest in kiara’s voice – he could easily tell, but did he analyse others too deeply at times? he swore that he didn’t study others at all, and it was just a natural habit, and maybe it was, or perhaps he picked it up from others. some things he picked up was his picking up of a kitchen knife and slicing it across a letter to open it rather than just tear it open, but then again he did feel a little bit ocd about keeping things tidy. or rather, small objects safe. his room would become world war three sometimes.
“i couldn’t help but noticing the strange colour of your eyes. i’ve never seen someone with purple eyes before, is that your actual eye colour?”
it was an odd thing to say while picking petals off a dying daisy, and when she finished their eyes met. riley’s eyes showed nothing; an empty void of no emotion, showing no memories at all. but after a moment, something reflected into his eyes that definitely wasn’t in this area. the figure of someone else, however they had disappeared as soon as they appeared, and riley couldn’t help but shake his head a bit, trying to rid it of the numb feeling of darkness and whispering dialogue in his head. a heartbeat later and the year four could smell sea water, fresh air, cherry blossom... the sight of a park-like area full of snow and his gaze on the floor, watching his feet make imprints on the white snow, and then a glance up to the sky to see its orange yellow blue colour, and a glance to the side to see r—
it cut off there.
“... it is my natural eye colour, but i wear contacts too. i’d rather not wear glasses,” he said without thinking, a reserved tone to his voice as he wrapped his arms around himself momentarily before placing them on the grass, feeling the cool texture of it underneath his fingers, a smile gracing his face however disappearing the moment it came.
his head had a small ache to it.

Everything went silent for a long time, Kiara and Riley had stopped talking completely, and even though they seemed to be looking at each other, their gaze just went straight through. Neither of them seemed to notice either of them were still here. Just wrapped up in their own thoughts (or in Riley's case, someone else's, but of course, Kiara didn't know that). Kiara was just asking herself silent questions she couldn't even answer, questions about why the hell she couldn't see past Riley, while he, himself... Only he knew. Kiara didn't have the slightest clue, which she had to admit, was a first. She felt so confused, and she had no one to ask, to tell. She knew she had to keep this a secret, or else bad things might start happening to her. Well, that's what she thought. It was probably best not to try to find out.
Of course, Riley was the first one to break the silence, answering a question Kiara had asked what seemed hours ago, when it was only a few minutes at the most. In fact, she'd almost forgotten, and the first thing she thought was; what the hell is this guy talking about? And then she remembered, and nodded. "It's a... It's a pretty colour. I think glasses might suit you, y'know." Damn those contacts. If she was going to find out anything about him, she was going to have to try to become close friends with him, and then one day, when his eyes were free of... Everything... She could take a good look, and then might be able to get some small answers. Clues. Whatever.
She didn't understand this guy, and she didn't like it one bit. Maybe he had a strange history, maybe he had a mental illness (which didn't seem possible), or maybe he was extremely good at hiding his true emotions and secrets. Maybe he believed his own lie? It seemed kind of dumb, but it could still be the reason. Everyone around here seemed to have something special, or weird about them, Kiara got that clue from most people she'd managed to lock eyes with (when passing them. Riley was the first person she'd actually started a conversation with). "So, um, what's it like in Japan? None of my er, family have been there as far as I know." She hated mentioning her family when talking to people, one reason being they weren't around any more, and she missed them, another reason being the fact that some people liked to ask questions. In this conversation, though, she needed to. She had to find out as much about Riley as she could, and even though her questions were a little strange (and stalker-ish, she did realise), she had to take the risk of scaring him away to get answers. She had to find out why she couldn't see past him.
She laughed a little, half-heartedly, almost like a sigh-laugh before adding, "Um, yeah, my questions might be a little weird to you, but I just want to start a conversation. It's good to make friends in new places, right?" Her smile was awkward, the look in her eyes screamed that she was more than a little uncomfortable at that time. Maybe she shouldn't have spoken to Riley at all today. Even though Kiara wasn't the one to start the conversation, she knew she couldn't have walked away from him, leaving him there to feel alone. She knew what loneliness felt like. She lived in it, and it wasn't that great. Obviously. She shifted a little in the place she was sitting, picking nervously at her dark coloured nails, that didn't exactly match her light clothing. Kiara didn't care, though, she wasn't here to look good. Actually... Thinking about it... Kiara had no idea what she was here for. She'd heard about the school, and the magic, but still...

(my honoured brethren; we come together to unite as one against those who are damned.)[we show no mercy for we have none.] “it’s a... it’s a pretty colour. i think glasses might suit you, y’know.”
he slowly blinked, before reaching into his jacket pocket, drawing two cases out. the solution for his contact lenses, and his glasses case. as he listened to her question as he, with practised ease, took the contacts out and placed them in the appropriate part of the solution before placing that back in his pocket. it was surprisingly empty in his pockets, and he always kept his glasses and contact solution with him. before riley answered he took the glasses out of their case, placing them upon his face and looking directly at kiara with a new feature to his face – a pair of black thin framed glasses, rimless at the bottom. he watched her closely for a moment, hiding the twitch of a smile on his face before looking down again.
before he had a chance to answer, kiara had added something. he nodded in response, adding, “they don’t seem to be weird to me. i’ve had and done odder.” he sighed lightly then slid his glasses off, allowing the blurriness into his vision as he placed the pair of lenses and frame on the notebook after folding the arms inwards. he looked back at kiara’s face, a look of contemplation on his face as he wondered how to describe it.
“hokkaidō is the northernmost of japan’s four man islands... it’s got a lot of national parks, and it’s divided into four. the north circuit, the east circuit, the south and the central circuit. it’s colder than the rest of japan, and... it’s more modern than the other parts of japan, as the japanese settled in within the last hundred years, whereas the rest of japan is more thousands of years ago... and um...” riley trailed off. he didn’t know what to say that would make him trail off into many memories, for whatever he would say about his part of hokkaidō could make him giggle a bit, or let a dreamy homesick expression onto his face.

Kiara was looking away from Riley now, feeling stranger than usual as a thought crashed in her mind. She was special. Not special like she belonged in this cruel world, not special like she meant something to anyone, because she didn't, not special as in disabled, not even close, but special in the way that she had abilities... Powers... Things like this that no one else experienced, stuff that some people didn't even believe was true. If anyone knew about the magic she had within her, and the power to see into people, some people would chase her down and ask her about everything, some people would tell others she was faking it, and others would think of her as a complete psycho, and drag her to some kind of asylum. Was she a psycho, or was she normal, but special? Who was it to decide? Why was she cursed like this? What had she done to deserve this?
Questions. Annoying little things in life. There's too many of them, and they're always there. Kiara hated people who said they didn't care about anything, because she knew they were just stopping people from thinking they were weak. Everyone's weak. Everyone cares. Why do people care? Because of the questions. If you ask questions, it shows you care. There's no one alive, or dead who didn't ask questions. It's natural to ask questions, and some people just didn't see that. That's what got Kiara so angry sometimes. She shook the thoughts away, feeling herself getting hotter with anger, and looked back at Riley, and realised that he was wearing glasses now. She smiled. "They do suit you."
Kiara let out a sigh of relief, "I'm glad you don't think they're weird, I feel like a bit of a creep to be honest." But she would. She had next to nothing when it turned down to self esteem, but who really cared? ... There she went again. She didn't want to bring hate down on herself, she didn't particularly like to, either, but for some reason, as much as she wanted to, she couldn't stop it. So much hate lived in her. Why?
She listened to Riley's explanation of his hometown, taking in each word. When he trailed off, he looked a little home sick, Kiara gave him a sympathetic look, "It sounds nice. I know... This place might never be home to you, or any of us, but we only have to stay a few years, and then we can choose... If we can stay or go. Who knows what we'll find by that time? Friends... Happiness. Maybe even love." She shrugged, her voice was soft, a little comforting to some people, maybe. She was thinking of many things as she gave her little speech. Her past, the present, the future. Home, where was that, now? Where did she belong? Anywhere, nowhere, somewhere. That's all she could say to herself at this time. She didn't know anyone any more. Even though she had nothing to live for, she forced herself to get on with it, and survive. If anyone knew her inside out, they might just respect that about her.
While she was talking, she was looking straight ahead of herself again, almost distant, but now, she turned back to Riley, who wasn't wearing contacts or glasses. She took her chance, and tried to lock eyes with him again. As she did, she got the same thing again, darkness and a high pitched eek sound. Tearing herself away she asked herself what was going on, even though she had no answer to that. Something was seriously wrong here, and she didn't know what to do.

(my honoured brethren; we come together to unite as one against those who are damned.)[we show no mercy for we have none.] “hey, don’t feel like one. we all act like creeps at one point in our lives,” the fourtene year old immediately said in response, raising an eyebrow in a dark manner, seriousness in his tone before he brightened up and smiled, ready to start laughing any time soon. that was the perfect example of his temperamental nature – a dark look before it returned to child-like innocence. when that happened riley always felt as though he had another personality... no, another person inside him. he had reason to believe that the flashes of memories he saw in his waking hours or the extremely vivid dreams that would sometimes turn to nightmares and cause him to start screaming and kicking and cause roy to come into his room to comfort him...
but enough of that.
“already found love,” he said, absentmindedly flicking his hair out of his face before adding, “and a new friend.” he smiled brightly at kiara before placing his hands behind him, leaning on them as he gazed up at the sky, watching as the blurred fluffy clouds moved across the deep blue sky at a slow pace. he had always thought that the world was fixed and everything revolved around planet earth, but turns out it wasn’t. when riley learned that you could almost say he was drop-jaw-for-five-minutes shocked. it was amusing to see that, i must say.
“where do you come from?” he asked, looking back at kiara and noticing that she was staring at his lilac optics. he raised his eyebrow again before using the only bit of magic he knew, and it came from the dreams he often had. in his past life he must have been a mage.
riley gave the girl a mental shock – it would feel as though there was a gentle electric shock in her head – in order to stop her from trying to get in contact with his eyes. - - - - - - - - - -TAGS O / MUSE fine / STATUS finished / LYRICS devil's cry (shall never surrender) xoxoNOTEPAD, sorry mine took a while LOL. i might change riley’s template and keith’s... hmm.
